Transfer Update

I've asked R to put these two posts up for me...

Transfer was Wednesday afternoon, and it went well. We transferred two 8-cell embryos that were graded Stage 1. (If you want to read about the full Day 3 embryo report, please see the post below this one.) Betas are next Friday and Monday the 14th.

The afternoon was not without it's moments, though.

I'm prone to leg cramps, and I think that drinking a lot of water quickly can trigger them. So there I was, laying on my back, the transfer table angled so that my head was lower than my pelvis. Doc had just transferred the embryos.

Then the cramping set in.

Both of my hamstrings began burning. I focused on not allowing myself to bounce around and dislodge the embryos. I tried to will the cramps away, but no luck.

After what seemed like an eternity but was really less than 10 seconds, I had to speak up and tell Doc what was going on. Still positioned with a full view of my nether region, he had to lift up one leg toward the ceiling to relieve the cramp, then the other leg. Laying there with two embryos newly transplanted inside of me, I was doing what looked like can-can dance kicks, wearing nothing but a paper drape below the waist.

I would have been mortified, if I hadn't already lost all semblance of modesty and dignity about 18 vaginal ultrasounds ago.

Sounds very promising!

I am hoping that the can-can dance incident becomes a very funny story you tell when discussing the birth of your baby(ies)one day in the future!

I wish you ALL the best.

Sorry to hear about the cramps, but it definitely does make for a great story!

I think that's a great story. It should be embellished and retold for years to come. If we can't have funny stories with all of this IVF stuff, what good is it? (other than the prospect of live babies, of course ...)

Dear Rebecca, everything sounds great -- I am keeping my fingers firmly crossed that everything keeps going so brilliantly!

And about the cramps and the Fertilization Dance: I agree with Watson, it's a great story to tell your kids!

(Assvice alert: if you're prone to cramping, it might be your magnesium levels are too low.)

Leg cramps and completely embarrassing moments aside, the transfer sounds like it went well. Wishing you a lot of good energy during the wait.

Hi Rebecca! Thanks for your post on my blog. I go to an RE here where I live, but I do get up your way quite often as my sister lives there! What part of town are you near? My sis is near Camelback and 28th (Biltmore Corridor), you? Why do you go so far for your RE? I thought there were like 6 REs there? Maybe you found someone really great in CA? I hope so!

I advise all of my friends who are also doing IVF to let go of the dignity early, since you're going to lose it anyway. I myself was once seen sobbing as I tried unsuccessfully to use the bedpan after a transfer. Nice.

I hope you are making it through the 2ww okay!
