A New Idea for Motivation to Exercise

Today, I came up with a brilliant new motivation to get my lazy bottom up off the couch and exercise.

Well, at least, it seemed like a brilliant idea when it popped to mind, although given that said lazy bottom is currently camped on the couch, maybe it's not going to be as effective as I hope it will.

Anyway, here's the idea...for every mile that I run (without stopping, without any walking), I will credit myself $1 toward a massage.

I love to get massages, particularly from one specific massage therapist at a nearby day spa. But it's on the expensive side - $75-$80 not including tip - so I don't do it very often and feel a wee bit guilty whenever I do.

I'm hoping this will be a more effective approach than "if I lose 10 pounds, I'll schedule a massage" (or buy a fabulous new dress or make reservations at that new restaurant I want to try), because that approach hasn't brought much success in the past.

So I'm thinking $80 massage = 80 miles = I'd have to lose at least some weight after running 80 miles, wouldn't I?

Since I'm out of shape, I may start by 1 mile = $2 in order to get myself started, and then switch to 1 mile = $1 after I get a little more up to speed (pun intended).

On another note...guess who has mild cramping and unusually sore boobs, is on CD33, and has 3 HPTs in the bathroom cabinet taunting her?

Yep, you guessed it.

I keep vascillating between thinking I might as well wait another week because chances are it's just CD1 getting ready to make an appearance and thinking I'd better test now, because if it's positive, I'd need to start up the Lovenox, prenatals, folgard, etc., ASAP.

I'll probably test in the next couple of days. Apparently there's at least a tiny part of me that's still an eternal optimist.

Either that, or I just love to torture myself with false hope.

That sounds like a great idea. This coming from the girl who was eating a pumpkin cream cheese roll this afternoon while watching an infomercial for Zumba. Lol.

I would test. I just can't keep my optimism down, no matter how much I get hurt by it sometimes. You just never know :)

P.S. I googled "vejazzling." There are pictures! Lordy!

I like your running idea! Rewards are such a great motivator, but my problem is I usually reward with food :) Seriously, the other night DH and I were running and saying out loud to each other: "we're only running to we can eat some chocolate babka." Sigh.

I would test too. I hope it's positive (DUH!).

Good rewards idea. I'd start with $2 per, so it's enough of a reward at the beginning. Maybe even more that $2.

I think that's a great motivational plan, I have a feeling that if you could patent and market it, you'd make a fortune. Maybe you could market it as "one simple trick a former couch potato used to get herself moving" and charge people $20 to find out what the trick is ;)

You've gotten pg on your own before, right? So it's not the craziest idea in the world. Yeah, I think I'd test too. After all, might as well make some use of those HPT's, right?

If you're overweight, you should do a fast walk instead of a run (there will be less of an impact on your joints). If you can walk on a treadmill, self.com had a great workout. Let me know and I'll send it to you. If you don't have access to a treadmill and will walk outside, try for areas with hills. Fast walking for 30 mins. is a great start.

My DH, who lost nearly 100 pounds after college (and kept it off), said losing weight is really all about the intake. You can exercise like a woman possessed, but if you don't decrease the calories you're eating, you won't lose weight. Again, Self had a good diet aimed at losing 2 pounds a week on a diet that's about 1,500 - 1,600 calories a day. All good, yummy healthy food. You need willpower, of course... and this is why I haven't lost more. I'm not going to make excuses... I really, truly enjoy my sweets. Says the gal who enjoyed 1/2 a whoopie pie, 1 reeses PB cup and a good handful of candy corns today. Any ONE of those treats would have been *okay*, but I've had all three. Damnit. The important thing is not to beat yourself up. Hang in there. And if you want support, just ask for it. You have lots of readers like me who will be only to happy to cheer you on! :)
